Southwest Adventure Part 3

Day 2. Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell

It was a job to get into Antelope Canyon. It was also the moment my DSLR camera decided to flip out. So most of these shots are from my phone or digital camera.
The light through this slot canyon is stunning. It is so narrow that for most of the way through, you can touch the sides with both hands.

Our guide was a native Navajo, who also helped us with some neat camera tricks for some cool shots. You cannot self-tour this canyon, so be sure to prepare by booking your tours in advance of your visit.

Our tour was of the Lower Canyon and it took about an hour.
Each tour group is made up of about 10 people with their own native guide. To get to the entrance, you must go down a rather slippery slope (there are handrails, use them!) then there are a few flights of stairs to help you get down to the canyon floor.

This is where we come out at the end of the canyon!
Amazingly, it isn't too bad of a squeeze.

After an easy sandwich lunch, we leave Antelope Canyon
and make a short drive to the dam over Lake Powell.

We were told this coal plant will finally be decommissioned next year.
It has managed to avoid environmental regulations since the 70s and is
horribly polluting. A new solar field will soon take its place.

The power grid in this area is insane. The dam generates power, along
with the coal plant.

Back in the van to drive up to a higher vantage point.

From this view we can see where we were at Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell.

Back in the van for another couple hours drive to Monument Valley.  We hear some local history from our tour guide, get some rest, watch a lot of the scenery go by as we enter Navajo Nation.

We arrive at Monument Valley in later afternoon, to set up our campsite before a jeep tour and dinner. It will be dark when we return.

Stay tuned for Part 4
