August Flotsam

Another summer month nearly gone.
Still plenty to do though.

Like see a 40 year old movie on the rooftop of the local movie theater.
I managed to get a ticket to a rooftop showing of Labyrinth.
It's been a while since I've seen this movie.
But it was a nice night to be outside, sipping on an Aperol spritz,
with David Bowie and a bunch of puppets.

I found this photo online, and I love it.
We need more whimsy in the architectural arts.
I haven't seen any architects dressed as their buildings.
And that's just sad.

Braved the early morning thunderstorm to drive to West Point, Iowa
for the Sweet Corn Festival.
Had to pull over at a rest stop for a few minutes to wait for the rain to let up.
Then, after making a detour to stock up on salads and snacks at Trader Joe's,
I made it in time to catch the parade with my parents and a nephew.

Om Nom nom Nom Nom...

Caught a prize at the fishing pond.

Some hot and humid line dancing.

The loot from the parade.
A lot of this will end up in the Halloween candy bag.

I had a $100 gift card to use at Amazon.
After the stuff I needed, like printer ink, batteries, and
mouthpiece patches, I added to cart this cute realistic plush flounder fish.
It arrived in the mail vacuum sealed, begging to be freed.

Woot! Much better.
I read a comment that flounders are the Peppa Pigs of the fish world,
and now I can't unsee it. Funny stuff.
It really is a fun plush.
And makes a handy tablet stand.

On the Bix7 race route, a church group was handing out these Jesus toys to the runners.
After realizing that it was not candy, I brought it home and
Not-Candy Jesus is now part of the sailing crew.
That first rubber chicken on the right is the captain.
Everybody works here at Screaming Pines.

My life jacket still fits!

Found a used copy of an Arabic phrase book.
Will be useful for the upcoming trip.

On a kayak.
On the Mighty Mississippi River
For my 4th Floatzilla.

Momster on her 3rd paddle.
She's not a noob now.

Bonesy McGee joined us.
Got a Baywatch rescue can at the ready.

The River was really calm this year.
Almost didn't have to do much to float down the channel.
Pretty easy day of paddling.

Going through the lock

Raft up as the water level drops several feet.

Some choppiness out of the lock, but once we got beyond the dam,
it was back to calm, smooth paddling.

Successfully arrived at the end point.

We did not join the mass photo this year,
but we had to stick around to wait for the busses to take us back to the launch point.
Because that's where our car was.

Safety first.

A brake light went out on the Whale.
I just got out from under the debt for all of the repairs I had to put into this car.
So, rather than take it to a shop and be charged a lot of money for a simple job,
I watched a video online, bought the bulbs at the auto parts store, and
fixed it myself.

It was really pretty easy.
Remove the light assembly, replace the burnt out bulb,
put the light back onto the car. Don't forget to
reattach the electrical cable to the light assembly.

All done.
Took about ten minutes and only needed a screwdriver and a new bulb.

The parrot is moulting.
There are tiny, adorable feathers all over the place.

Getting packed up.

Applying for a grant to rehab Screaming Pines.
Got a postcard from the City telling me that I might be eligible to apply.
Worth a shot, anyway.
Now have a stack of papers to fill out and copies of documents to get into
the mail before I leave town.

Flight leaves soon.
Do I have everything I need?!
Guess I'll find out.

Pre-vacay concert.
Todd Rundgren was there.

Heart.
I had tickets last year, but the tour was cancelled due to Ann Wilson's cancer diagnosis.
But she's back on the road.
And the Moline stop worked out with my schedule, so I grabbed a cheapish seat.

She's seated for the show, but can still sing.
And Nancy Wilson can still rawk a guitar.
A good show.

And, now some time for a short nap before it's up early to
get myself to O'Hare airport in time for my flight.

See ya on the other side.
